The forest here is blanketed in moss, ferns, and wild orchids, kept green year-round by moisture from the clouds. Keep your eyes peeled for the rare Resplendent Quetzal, a bird colorful enough that birdwatchers travel from all over the world just to see one.
2. Experience the original canopy tour
Monteverde is the birthplace of the canopy tour, and still one of the best places in Costa Rica to go ziplining. Fly above the cloud forest on miles of cables, try a tarzan swing, or take the “Superman” line, where you fly face-first through the mist.
3. Take a night jungle tour
When the sun goes down, a different set of animals wakes up. A guided night walk reveals wildlife that stays hidden during the day, your best chance to spot sleeping toucans, tarantulas, glowing click beetles, and glass frogs.
4. Tour a local coffee and chocolate plantation
The volcanic soil and high altitude make Monteverde good territory for growing coffee. A farm tour walks you through how coffee cherries are harvested and roasted, followed by a tasting of local dark chocolate.
Getting to Monteverde: skip the rough drive
The roads leading up the mountain to Monteverde are steep, unpaved, and bumpy. Gravel and loose rocks make driving a regular car difficult and hard on the vehicle.
